Physical infrastructure
Network Overview
The technology proposed in the N+I'98 Paris network is exclusively based on frame. It is a
Gigabit Ethernet backbone based on 12 Bay Networks Accelar routing switches.
Client connections are all Fast Ethernet (10/100 autosensing) based on BayStack 450
switches. Network Management is provided on HP open view with Optivity NMS.
Optivity Analysis is used in conjonction with external RMON probes.
Physical infrastructure
The Hall 1 of Paris Expo has been divided into 8 areas in order to keep the cabling range
under 210 meters. Each of the 7 areas are concentrated with 3 pairs of Multimode fiber to
the central area where the NOC is.
The areas are numbered from 1 (NOC) to 8. The PED
were users are connected are numbered from 0 to 10. PED 0, 1 and 9 are backbone PED.
PED 10 is located in Hall 7 and is providing connectivity to the conference rooms.
See
Physical infrastructure drawing.
Gigabit backbone Concept
Users connect to concentration points called PED
Each user PED is dual homed via GigaBit Ethernet trunks to the backbone concentration points (C-PED)
All three concentration points (PED 0, 1, 9) are located in the Network Operations Center
Gigabit backbone conceptual view
User PED (or Edge PED)
Each Edge PED consist of an Accelar 1200 routing switches and 3 BayStack 450
(L2 switch).
The 10/100 Meg normal users can be concentrated on the BS450 (24 ports per BS450).
Special users can be directly concentrated on the Accelar routing switch (32 ports available)
if they request additionnal IP addresses or additional subnets.
Concentration PED (C-Ped)
All Concentration PED (C-Ped) are located in the Network Operations Center (NOC).
Each C-PED consist of an Accelar 1200 routing switch meshed
to the other C-PED using Gigabit Ethernet trunks. Gigabit Ethernet feeder links connects to
the user-Ped.
The Network Operation Center (NOC)
The NOC consist of
-
The accelar of C-Ped 1 concentrate all backup Gig feeder links coming from the Edge-Peds.
It also connects 3 BayStack 450 which concentrate the users of area 1.
-
The two accelars of C-Ped 0 and C-Ped 9 concentrate Gig feeder links coming from the Edge-Peds.
They also connect to the internet via two BN routers attached with Fast Ethernet.
Extra Gig interfaces are used on these two C-Peds to connect the Silicon Graphics Video servers.
The application running on the Silicon graphics Video servers is generating IP
multicast traffic.
-
Two Backbone Node (BNŽ) routers.
The two routers are equipped with Fast Router Engine FRE to connect to the
Gigabit Ethernet backbone.
Two HSSI interfaces are used for connecting the Internet Service Providers
via a SDH mux and a E3 mux.
-
Two 10/100Meg BayStack 250 hubs to connect the C-PED 0 and 9 to the routers and
two other BS250 for Network Management, DNS and NOC user workstations.
Hall 7 : conference rooms (PED 10)
The PED 10 gives connectivity to the conference rooms of Hall 7. It is connected to the
backbone using Fast Ethernet link over Multimode Fiber from a BS450 switch.
Active equipment
Here is a view of the active equipment that is put in place at Interop'98 Paris. The Routing Switches
are Accelar Model 1200 with redundant power, redundant switch fabric and Gigabit interfaces
equiped with redundant port providing the "link safe" feature, a subsecond takeover in case of fiber cut.

Planning & schedule
IP scheme, naming scheme
Interop has the following class B address: 130.129.0.0
A class C is provisionned on each BayStack 450 to connect the users.
There are 3 BS 450 in each area.
The Accelar of each area has the name of the area: for area1: xlr1, for area 2: xlr2 etc...
The name of the BS450 correpond to the Class C address it owns.
In area1, BS11 connects users on 130.129.11.0, BS12 on 130.129.12.x and BS13 on 130.129.13.x.
The same scheme is used for area2 to 8.
Infrastructure of the Network Operations Center (NOC)
The NOC users all connect to Accelar of the backbone C-PED 9.
The silicon Graphics Multicast Mpeg server is directly connected to the Accelar via
an Alteon Gig interface . Network 130.129.210.0 is allocated.
